小平駐屯地でプチ講演

昨日、陸上自衛隊小平駐屯地の語学学校で、ちょっとした講義をしました。米軍のことや、軍事通訳・翻訳のコツとか、カジュアルな感じでお話をしました。自衛官のみなさんは、入校中に過密なスケジュールの中で、英語の勉強に頑張ってると思いますので、せめて私の講義で少し息抜きができたかな？

一つ言い忘れたけど、外国語を勉強する時は、まったく興味がわかない形で勉強するよりは、自分の好きな趣味に勉強をからませば良いと思います。映画が好きなら、日本語のサブタイトル無しで英語の音声を聞いて、2回目は日本語のサブタイトルを読みながら自分の理解度をチェックしたり。釣りが好きなら、英語の釣り雑誌を読んでみたり。私の場合は、マンガ、アニメ、バラエティ番組を見て日本語の勉強をしました。

英語とか通訳が上手くなりたい方は、いろいろなことに興味を持つことが大事です。「自分は上手だ」と満足して立ち止まってはいけません。常に向上心を持ってください。上には絶対上がありますから。私の上には、恐ろしいほどの上手い通訳・翻訳者がいますので、私の修行は続きます。

A little lecture at JGSDF Camp Kodaira
Yesterday, I went to the Japan Ground Self Defense Force Camp Kodaira Language School and gave a little lecture. I talked about the US military and shared some tips on military translation in a very relaxed, informal style. The JGSDF soldiers probably worked hard to study English in a tightly packed training schedule, so I hope they were able to take a little break during my lecture.

Oh, I forgot to mention this in my lecture, but when you study a foreign language, instead of forcing yourself to study with material that is boring to you, you'll probably learn faster if you study through a favorite hobby. If you like watching movies, turn off the Japanese subtitles in the first round and listen to the English, then in the second round, check your comprehension level as you read the Japanese subtitles. If you like fishing, try reading an English fishing magazaine or something. In my case, I learned a lot of my Japanese through manga, anime, and TV comedy/entertainment shows.

For those who want to become good translators and/or speak English well, it's important to be curious with all kinds of things. You shouldn't be satisfied with your present level. Please don't lose your desire to improve, because there will always be someone better than you. There are a bazillion people who are better translator/interpreter than me, so I continue to strive to become better.

JGSDF soldiers, drive on! If you ever lose motivation, I can always go smack some motivation into you! (^_^)

PS. Arrghh, I need to finish up my translation so I can play "Metal Gear Solid 4". Snake, stand by!
