同級生は金メダリスト？！

先日、普段は同窓会とかのお知らせしかしない同級生用のメルマガに、未だに信じられないほどの仰天ニュースがありました。なんと、同級生のクリスティン・アームストロングちゃんが、北京オリンピックでアメリカ代表の女子サイクリングチームの一員として出場して、みごと金メダルを取ってたんです！！マジですかぁ？！スゲー！！おめでとう！！o(>_<)o

しかし高校時代に、３つ離れた席で同じ授業を受けていたあのクリスティンちゃんが…　それに、同じバレーとサッカーチームで一緒にプレイしてたし…　うわー。（あ、余談ですが、アメリカンスクールの部活は日本の部活動と違って、シーズンが終わるとチームが解散するので、１年を通していろんなスポーツができる制度です。うちの学校は、秋は女子バレーかテニス、冬は女子サッカーかクロスカントリー、春はバスケかゴルフでした。私は背が低いんで、春の女子バスケに入れなくて、代わりに男子サッカーのマネージャーをやってました。）　

…でも月日は流れ、彼女はいずれオリンピックのトップ選手になり、そして私はしがない軍事通訳・マンガ翻訳家になる。人生っていろんな分かれ道もあるし、何起きるかホント分かんないですね。(^^;

My classmate is a gold medalist?!
The other day, in a high school alumni email newsletter that usually only covered upcoming class reunions and such, I read about a really eye-popping news that I still find hard to believe. My classmate, Kristin Armstrong-chan, on the US women's cycling team at the Beijing Olympics, won a gold medal in the Women's Individual Time Trial!! Holy freaking crap!! That's outstanding!! Congrats!! o(>_<)o

Back in high school, Kristin sat about 3 desks away from me in the same class... and we played volleyball and soccer on the same team, too... wow. (Ah, this is just FYI, but in US schools, unlike the Japanese schools, the sports club ended when the season ended, so you could play in several sports throughout the year. Our school had girls volleyball and tennis in the fall, girls soccer and cross country in the winter, and girls basketball and golf in spring. I was too short to make the girls basketball team, so I was the boys soccer team manager instead.)

...But as time passed on, Kristin eventually became a top Olympic athlete, and I ended up being a piddly little military/manga translator. Life's path diverges many times, and you never know where you'll end up at. (^^;
