初任部隊の看板。

big sign, little dog...

NBCは、Nuclear(核)Biological(生物)Chemical(化学)Defense(防護)の略語ですが、最近ではCBRN Defenseに改名されたようです。CBRN Defenseは、Chemical(化学)Biological(生物)Radiological(放射能)Nuclear(核)Defense(防護)です。放射能の要素を加えた以外、意味的にはあまり変わらないですが。(^^;

因みにCBRNの発音は「シーバーン」です。前の「エヌ・ビー・シー」よりは言いやすいかも。たまにCBRNE(発音:シーバーニ)を見かけるかもしれませんが、EはEnergy(エネルギー・発電)のことなので、CBRN・NBCとあまり意味が変わりません。要は、「ありとあらゆる危険なモノ」と考えてください。(^^;

余談ですが、当時私は、サイズを間違えてこんなに大きい看板を注文してしまいました。今となっては遠くからでも見やすい看板だと評価されているようですが、あの時は上級曹長がビックリしていたなぁ。でもサインを作った人たちが疑問に思わないまま注文どおり作ったのもアレですね。(^^;

The sign of my first unit.
The first unit I was stationed at was the Okinawa USMC NBC Defense Unit. It's been a while since I visited my old unit building, but I noticed something different about the sign. (*_*)

Oh, the name of the unit changed. Back when I was there, it was called "3rd Marine Division G-3 NBC Defense Unit" but it's now called the "3rd Marine Division CBRN Defense Unit." I used Baron as a size marker. (^_^)

NBC is the acronym for Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense, but in recent years, it's been renamed to CBRN Defense, which is Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense. Other than the addition of the word "Radiological", there's not much difference from the old NBC. (^^;

The common way to pronounce CBRN is "C-burn". I suppose it's easier to pronounce than the old "N-B-C". You might run across the acronym "CBRNE", but they just added E for Energy, so it's not much different than the other two acryonyms. Basically, the people in this specialty deal with "all kinds of dangerous things." (^^;

I guess I'm used to the term CBRN by now, but NBC still gives me the warm and fuzzy feelings. No matter how much the non-NBC Marines call it "NBC, NoBody Cares" or "NBC, Nothing But Crap", I like the word NBC! (>_<)

But I should've taken a picture of the sign before they changed it! Dammit! (T_T)

This is just an old story, but when I ordered the sign, I totally screwed up the size and ended up with this big-ass sign. I guess this sign is now appreciated for being big and easy to see from a distance, but back then, my old Master Gunnery Sergeant freaked out at enormous sign. But it's kinda funny that the people who made the sign didn't question the size and made it anyway. (^^;
