女性に言ってはいけない「サー」（Sir)！

アメリカの戦争・軍事映画でよく聞く「イェッサー(Yes, Sir)」。もしかして女性に「サー(Sir)」を言ってるのでは？それは間違いです！

米軍では男性将校・上官に対し「サー(Sir)」は使われるが、女性将校・上官に対し「マアム(Ma'am)」を使ってください。　"Ma'am"は、"Madam"を短くした言葉です。誤って女性将校に「Yes, sir!」と言ってしまったら、ガン飛ばされて、あとは何されるか分かりませんよ。(T_T)　でも下士官に関しては、サーやマアム（Sir/Ma'am）を使わず、男女関係なく階級を使います。例えば、「はい、２等軍曹(Yes, Staff Sergeant)」や「違います、上級曹長(No, Sergeant Major)」。因みに、海兵隊と海軍では"Aye, ma'am"（了解です、マアム）が使われます。

言っておきますが、卓球の福原愛ちゃんが発する「サー!」は全く関係ありません。でもチョコチップクッキーのブランド名「カントリーマアム」は英語で"Country Ma'am"なので、多いに関係あります。「アメリカの田舎のお祖母さんが作る美味しいクッキー」と言うイメージらしいです。

Don't ever say "Sir" to a woman!
(Note: This post is mainly for Japanese people. Following is a courtesy English translation.) I'm sure you've heard the phrase "Yes, sir" in American war/military movies. But did you ever say "sir" to a woman? Don't, because it's wrong!

In the US military, "Sir" is used to address male officers and superiors, but for female officers and superiors, use "Ma'am." "Ma'am" is a shortened form of "Madam". If you reply to a female officer, "Yes, sir," by mistake, you'll probably get glared at, and who knows what afterward.(T_T) But for NCOs (non-commissioned officers), regardless of gender, you won't use "sir" or "ma'am" but rather, their respective ranks. For example, "Yes, Staff Sergeant" and "No, Sergeant Major." Also, in the Marine Corps and the Navy, they say, "Aye, ma'am."

Just to clarify, table tennis player Fukuhara Ai's "Saah!" has nothing to do with this post. But the chocolate chip cookie brand, "Country Ma'am" does. The brand name conjures the image of a "grandmother in the American countryside baking tasty cookies."
