翻訳の頭痛： ダジャレ
マンガやラノベを英訳する際、頭が痛くなるのはダジャレです。たまたま英語で似たような意味やインパクトのあるダジャレがあれば問題ないんですが、そうでないケースの方が断然多い。では、どうやって対処するのか？
- まず、できるだけ意味的に近いダジャレを探す。
- もし、ストーリーの要であればインパクトのあるダジャレ。絶対スベらないモノを選ぶ。
- もし、その他のマイナーギャグであらば、あまり目立たない、さりげないダジャレを使う。別にスベっても特に問題ない。
- 最後に、ストーリーの流れを妨げないダジャレかどうか確認する。
- どうしても同等のダジャレが見つからない場合、スルーするか（マイナーギャグのみ）、註釈で細かく説明する（その時点でおかしさ半減ですけど。）
例えば、「犬は居ぬ」（いぬはいぬ）。では、英語に翻訳してみてくださ〜い。…アレ、どうしたの？難しい？…でしょうね。マンガとラノベでは日常茶飯事ですから。orz

A translation headache: Puns
Puns cause major headaches when I'm translating manga and novels into English. I'm lucky if I can find an English-equivalent pun that has the same impact as the original Japanese pun, but that doesn't happen much. So, what's the best way to deal with them?
- First, find a pun that's closest to the original.
- Next, if the pun is a key element of the story, the translated pun has to have impact. And it has to be funny.
- Or, if the pun is a minor gag amongst others, then the translated pun should be light and subtle. It's okay if it isn't that funny.
- Finally, determine if that pun affects the flow of the story or not.
- But, if there's absolutely no English puns that will do it justice, then you'll have to resort to ignoring it (minor gags only), or fess up and explain it in the back notes (but half the humor will be lost by then.)
For example, let's take the phrase "Inu wa inu" - The dog ("inu") isn't here (also "inu".) Okay, try to find a good English pun for that. Hm, what's wrong? Having a hard time? ...I bet. Manga and light novels are full of puns. orz
